Job Description

Background and Context 


Heritors Labs Limited, with the support of the RISA Fund and FCDO, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), is organizing a Grant Writing Training for Women in Research and Innovation. This training aims to build the capacity of women in the R&I sector, equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully apply for research funding. The training will take place on Tuesday, 28th January 2025, at the Heritors Institute, East Legon, Accra. 


To ensure the success of this event, Heritors Labs seeks a Consultant who will design, deliver, and facilitate the training, using best practices in adult learning and grant writing. 


 

Objectives of the Assignment 


The primary objective of the consultancy is to design, prepare, and deliver a one-day grant writing training for women researchers and innovators. The consultant will: 


Design a comprehensive training program, including a detailed agenda and content for the training. 


Develop training materials and tools (e.g., presentations, workbooks, templates). 


Facilitate the training on the specified date, ensuring an interactive and engaging learning environment. 


Provide post-training support or resources to ensure the continued application of skills learned. 



Duration and Timeframe 

The consultant will be engaged for the following duration: 

  • Preparation and Design Phase:  
  • Training Delivery: Full-day facilitation on 28th January 2025
  • Evaluation and Report:  


Payment and Remuneration 

The consultant will be paid based on a lump sum amount to be agreed upon, contingent upon successful completion of the deliverables. Payments will be made in installments: 

  • 50% upon signing the contract and submission of the training program design and materials. 
  • 50% within 1 week after successful completion of the training and submission of the evaluation report.

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria: 

  • Relevant experience in grant writing and training facilitation.

Requirements

The consultant will undertake the following tasks: 


Training Needs Assessment (Optional)

  • If deemed necessary, the consultant may conduct a brief needs assessment or consultation with key stakeholders to tailor the training content to the participants’ needs. 


Design the Training Program

  • Develop a detailed agenda for the day. 
  • Create and organize content on key topics related to grant writing, including: 
  • Understanding funding opportunities. 
  • Structuring a grant proposal. 
  • Writing clear objectives and justifications. 
  • Common mistakes in grant writing. 
  • Gender-inclusive innovation in grant proposals. 
  • Prepare presentation materials, handouts, and other relevant resources. 


Facilitate the Training

  • Deliver the training, ensuring active participation and engagement from the attendees. 
  • Use a variety of teaching methods (lectures, case studies, workshops, discussions, etc.) to ensure diverse learning styles are accommodated. 
  • Provide practical examples and work through live grant proposal exercises with participants.


Evaluation and Feedback

  • Conduct an informal evaluation during and after the training to gather feedback from participants on the training’s effectiveness. 
  • Provide a summary report outlining feedback, suggestions for future trainings, and key outcomes of the session. 


Post-Training Support (Optional)

  • Provide any supplementary resources (e.g., templates, further readings, online resources) to participants. 
  • Offer a follow-up consultation (if requested) to support participants in applying what they learned. 

 

Deliverables 

The consultant will deliver the following outputs: 


Training Program Design

  • Detailed agenda and structured content plan. 
  • Presentation materials, handouts, and supporting resources. 

Training Delivery

  • A full-day interactive training on 28th January 2025
  • Engaging training environment with active participation. 

Evaluation Report

  • A report summarizing the outcomes of the training, participant feedback, and any recommended follow-up actions. 

Post-Training Resources

  • Any additional resources shared with participants post-event, such as grant writing templates, checklists, or further readings. 


Qualification

The consultant should have the following qualifications and experience: 


Educational Background: A degree in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, business administration, project management, or a related field). 


Experience: 


Minimum of 5 years’ experience in grant writing, with a proven track record of successful grant applications. 


Experience in delivering training workshops, preferably in the areas of research, innovation, or grant writing. 


Experience working with women in research, innovation, or academia is an advantage. 


Skills: 


Strong facilitation and presentation skills. 


Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences. 


Knowledge of the Ghanaian R&I landscape and funding bodies is a plus. 


References: At least two references from previous training or consulting engagements.
